Migration Patterns During Wartime: Creation Myth
Migration Patterns During Wartime: Creation MythThis video/ performance tryptic is composed of three parts: "Creation Myth", "Migration Patterns During Wartime" and "Exodus". In the first part of this series a deity creates a nomadic community composed of people that morph into animal hybrids. In "Migration Patterns..." these creatures travel 90 miles from San Antonio to Austin, some hitchhiking, others using public busses, to find others like them and seek pilgrimage at the state's capitol building trying to impact laws on immigration. The final segment, Exodus, follows the creatures after they have been exiled in the desert that straddles the US/ Mexico border. In this chapter the creatures struggle to understand how to build a community and construct a home.Supported by the Andy Warhol Foundation and Diverse Works Idea Fund. Exhibited at SOMA, DF Mexico.
Women of Color News Network
Women of Color News NetworkVideo Still. The Woman of Color News Network is an art and social justice video initiative that questions how news worthy narratives are identified and who creates news content. The premise for WCNN began with a question: What stories do I miss and what truths do I not understand as a result of not having access to robust news media as funded, investigated and reported by women of color? The pilot episode has two types of stories 1) DIMENSIONS: traditional fact based reporting that highlights the narratives and points of view of women identifying people of color and 2) ACCELARATED DIMENSIONS: stories that may someday become relevant to traditional fact based reporting but at the moment of the films creation were imaginings, alternative realities, emotional narratives (things that felt true) and productive fictions. The project aims to illuminate new and underreported stories and lay the foundation for others to play a part in constructing the media and narratives of the world around them.
Mirror Tools
Mirror ToolsIn collaboration with Rory Park clients from the Grand Central Neighborhood’s Drop-In Shelter for the Homeless and the Art Student’s League, participants completed a 6 week workshop during which time they were partnered with one another and made art projects that reflected processes of witnessing and mirroring. For the final exhibition the partners collaboratively designed a custom frame to house one image made by each partner and one image they made collaboratively that represented the intersection of their ideas and visual languages. The frames functioned almost like Venn Diagrams, showing two parts and the space of their intersection. This image was used as a handout for an exercise where participants were asked to draw a how-to, step-by-step manual for their dreams to share with their partners. This project was made possible through a Rema Hort Mann Community Engagement Grant and was completed in collaboration with the Art Students League and Grand Central Neighborhood’s Drop-In Shelter. Soy Brownsville
Soy BrownsvilleParticipatory community project and dance. To create this work participants submitted text and gestures through social media in reply to the prompts “I am, I hope and I will”. These gestures were then compiled and choreographed into a single performance. The score was set onto a cast of performers who interpreted the text/ gestures of the digital submission in a live performance. The work allowed participants regardless of race, class, mobility or artistic training to play a role in crafting and claiming their city while also combatting common misperceptions and stereotypes about the region. The program was choreographed by Caty Wantland and created as part of buildingcommunityWORKSHOP's Activating Vacancy Arts Incubator.

Socially Engaged Art and Meaning Making
Socially Engaged Art and Meaning Making What is Socially Engaged Art? Who decides what qualifies to be included in this category and how? Are there universal standard of inclusion or is the taxonomy completely subjective? To answer these questions I sat down with Socialy Engaged Artist and Director of Adult and Academic Programs and the Museum of Modern Art, NY Pablo Helguera. The video here is an excerpt from a visualized poetics that I made response to our conversation.
